Antarctica, without a global vision no future remain!
The obstructionism of 3 of the 25 member countries of the commission prevented the birth of the biggest marine protected area of the world.
This is a bad moment for the movements that are fighting for the creation of a marine sanctuary in Antarctica. The project is very important because is a concrete help to reduce the climate change effects.
Unfortunately, three actors that are Russia, China, and Norway has placed before their private interests to the global interests. Despite 2.7 million people are sustaining the project the commission was not able to arrive at the goal.
As reported by Frida Bengtsson of Greenpeace’s Protect the Antarctic campaign ( read the article here), this a historic opportunity lost.
But why these countries have boycotted the agreement? it is easy to say, they have high economic interests in Antarctica. The fishing is a priority for these countries.
Greenpeace is very critical with the commission. Coming to say that if it is not able to achieve the goals it was born. It is better to stop it and start again from the UN negotiations.
Frida Bengtsson also said: “We are running out of time and scientists are clear that we must create marine sanctuaries in at least 30% of our oceans by 2030. To protect wildlife, to guarantee food security for billions and to help tackle climate change.”
You can read more about the project here. Join to other almost 3 million people all around the world to create this strategic marine park. The battle maybe is lost but the war not yet!
