he loves the desert or semi-desert lands, he lives even in the small bush of savanna. Caracal prefers drylands, so just in the forest don’t live. Anyway, his preferred habitat is the desert and the semi-desertic regions.


It is a medium wildcat if compared with the lion but mostly time he shares the same habitat. He is 50 cm high and he can weigh between 14 to 20 kg. Typically he has on the ears some hairs around 8 cm long.

It is endemic of Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and India, is present in good quantity and he has not any risk of extinction.


This beautiful cat is a specialist on hunting birds, his body is a perfect machine built for jump and catch the prey when try to leave during the attack. His diet is extremely various, depend even on the geographical area where is, he can eat rabbit or rat of birds even big, in his diet, there are even small gazelle or antelopes like dik-dik, so he doesn’t have any problem, wherever he is he find something to eat. His character is aggressive and there are some profs of attack at the humans after they disturb him.

He is a nocturnal hunter, during the day he rests in the burrows of other animals. Anyway, in case of the clouded sky, he can hunt even with daylight.

The dangers for him arrives from animals in the same areas. Like lion’s hyenas and primarily the leopard.

Major Risks

The concern in his case is minimal. Basically, there are some locations where is even extinct. Other areas he is at risk extinction. But in central and South Africa he is in good and stable number. So, for this reason, he is considered Least Concern.
