Special interview to Captain Paul Watson founder and president of Sea Shepherd by Stella McCartney
The three laws of ecology
I want to introduce today a very important person in safeguarding of environment, the Captain Paul Watson. For who don’t know him, it was co-founder of Greenpace and founder of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. He become a celebrity about the Sea Shepherd’s battles against the Japanese whalers, and the battles was filmed and transmitted all around the world . It isn’t our intention to celebrate the hundreds battles he did, our goal is to encourage people to read and meditate about his ecologist thought.
We do this using a long editorial he wrote and post in the Lifegate site, in this editorial Paul explain the three laws of ecology.
Like he wrote in the editorial, this laws has been studied in collaboration with Robert and Roberta Hunter, Patrick Moore, David Garrick and Rod Marining.
The law of diversity: The strength of an eco-system is dependent upon the diversity of species within it.
The law of interdependence: All species are interdependent with each other.
The law of finite resources: There are limits to growth and limits to carrying capacity.[wp_bannerize group=”inarticle”]
I want to talk about this three laws because in several of our posts and specially the posts regarding animals we insist to promote the necessary awareness of the importance of the biodiversity, so now you will know from where our persuasion come . Many people and specially who take awareness for the first time of the necessity of protection of environment and wildlife, ask me why is so important the biodiversity, and again why is so important to stop the extinction of species.
According with the first law, the power of ecosystem depend directly from the diversity between the species, less diversity less power, less species is less diversity and consequently less power in the ecosystem. So we can say our health depend directly from the ecosystem health. The law of interdependence explain which all species are connected each other, so if one specie will be extinct, the ecosystem will be injured, and more species are extincts more the disease of ecosystem will be big, up to no return line.
The third law is becoming more clear in the mind of people, we are a lot, we are too much and we are growing again, up when can resist the ecosystems before collapse? In the Paul opinion we are very close at the collapses, his prevision is shocking, less then ten years he said, by 2025 the ecosistems of the coral reefs worldwide will be died and worldwide commercial fishing operations by 2030. Is catastrophic his prediction but he don’t lose hope, we join to him thought when he say, the future depend from our vision, if we refuse the anthropocentric vision and we embracing biocentrism there is hope. Important is to understand that is necessary to follow the ecology laws otherwise we’ll die with the ecosystem
The editorial need to be read completely up to the last word, is a ‘letio magistralis of ecology’ is a thought on which it is important to reflect.
